Another banner day at the Model T Museum, thanks to our great VolunTeers and donors.

Two line shafts have been installed in the Vintage Garage Machine Shop and the amazing machinery, dating from 1912 to 1920s is up and running! Congratulations to Jerry Kramer and all those who worked on this project and all who donated the machines that include a hacksaw, lathe, drill press, and more. An upcoming issue of the Vintage Ford will include more details of who donated all the machinery and steps of installation.

Another volunteer crew continues to work on installation of the tin ceiling in the new dealership showroom entry. Wait until you see that completed! Our VolunTeers can do ANYTHING!

How close will Museum visitors be able to get to this running machinery? Just thinking about the period correct lack of guards and possible liability...

I don't see any washers on the shaft.

The liability we face in the museum would be no different than what you face when you give rides in an old car without seatbelts or other modern safety items. The machinery can only be started by authorized personal. The machine shop has a barrier at the door that discourages unauthorized entry but allows anyone to look inside.

We didn’t think about the washers that move back and forth to keep the line shaft clean until after the shafts were installed. Hopefully someone will come up with a way to add them without disassembling the shafts.

We still have about three feet of line shaft left that can drive another machine; would really like to find some sort of small vertical milling machine to put there.

Wish I could have known about it sooner. I have a post drill I would have donated. Its been in the family since the turn of the century.

Spade, We already have four post drills, one of which is very nice and will soon be mounted in the Vintage Garage. It is a hand crank model. If anyone needs one let me know. We are running out of room to store extra items. Jerry

I did not know about washers on a line shaft until I went to the OCF in 2016, someone asked about them and their function. When the person in the machine shop explained their function it made sense to not have a lot of oil flying off the shaft. Should be easy enough to add them, couple of cardboard circles with a split then glued together. Thanks for posting the video.

Dan and Mark, Both great ideas. We may experiment using material other than steel. I did add grease zerks to all the bearings to minimize drips and frequency of lubrications. Thanks for your thoughts.

Usually there is a board by each machine to
shift the belt from the driven pulley to an idler pulley so the operator could either power the machine or stop it so the machined part could be placed on the machine or removed from it. I did not see any means to accomplish this and all machines were running all the time.

It all looks fantastic. Line shafts are just so memorizing to me. So mechanical, so basic.

So Spade, that post drill has been in your family since 2000 huh?

Ted, Every machine has a clutch and can be turned on or off as the line shaft is running. The clutch mechanism is built into the machine on all except the lathe. It’s clutch is mounted on the wall above the lathe.
