I have an opportunity to buy a static balancer assembly that was used in an industrial shop. I want to be able to balance my transmission and flywheel assembly. It is similar to this>

I don't know the diameter of the flywheel with a ring gear on it. Do any of you know? I don't want to waste money on a balancer that is too small, even though it will be at a fire-sale price.

Half of the 15 1/4" diameter would be a little over 7 1/2' , so if the height will accommodate that, you should be good. Its a good thing that you can get it at a bargain, because at that price, for a new on, you'd better be in the balancing business.

Heck even the price of a used one!! (Esp. if they know what it is)

I was fortunate enough to "inherit" mine many years ago !

I bought mine off a trailer for $90. I love auctions.

If you use two transmission shafts as your mandrel, The required clearance drops half the diameter of the shafts, so you likely only need 7" of clearance.

One of those balancers would be nice. I made mine with a piece of heavy steel channel for the base and four steel uprights carrying two 14" power hacksaw blades as straight edges. The back edge of the blades was ground down close to a knife edge. The flywheel is mounted on two transmission shafts. The whole is set up level on a benchtop, and the flywheel allowed to turn as it wants. My godson put one of my balanced flywheels on their special dynamic balancer once. It took I/8" deeper in the same 1/4" hole I drilled to make it better, so I was pleased with that.

Finding one would be nice, but like Allan, make do with what can be made from scrap.

I originally bought angle iron to make a knife-edge balancer, but I have not built it yet. The company I work for is selling two of the rotating balancers, among other excess equipment, in a charity auction. I'm bidding on both balancers. If successful, I may share one of them in the classifieds. I also bid on a pallet filled with micrometers from 1" up to 16", inside, outside, depth and bore varieties. I have no idea what I will do with dozens of those. I only want two of them to complete my set but had to bid on the whole pallet.

Has anybody tried this one from Harbor Freight? Its only $44.00

Success! I was outbid at the silent auction, but the buyer is a friend of mine and he sold one of the balancers to me for $50. It was a great deal and will accept up to 21" diameter.

I have a similar old unit. I have balanced motorcycle wheels by removing the rods & setting each side on 4x4's to get out of normal size limitations.
A friend has one that stands 3' tall. I believe its that tall for floor use to put a crank @ a handy working height.
Great tool to own.

I made my knife edge by cutting a sheering blade from a paper cutter in half and mounted to an adjustable frame. Nick the edge even setting the shaft down easy on it, so need to round it over a bit someday.

John, Id steer clear of the HF unit. A guy I know purchased a balancer with small whels and it doesnt have the sensitivity you need.

Mark yours is made by the Stuhr, the top name in static balancers. The price of new ones is thru the roof. You probably know that already. Mine is a knock off but works ok. It takes 1/8" diam steel ball bearings. Changing them out increased sensitivity

Everybody but me got a wonderful deal on their balancers. Any idea what the going rate is?
Im thinking at least $300.

Thanks Mark. It looks kinda short for a flywheel but maybe thats just the angle of the photos. The seller doesnt give any specs.
