Carburetor air leak?

I think I know the answer to this, but I'll see if anybody confirms my suspicion. What is the likely effect of air leaking in around a worn throttle shaft? The carb in question is a standard NH, but I expect this applies to any similar carburetor.

Usually just a lean idle, or if really loose, idle may be too high. If you richen enough to idle good, probably too rich off idle...

I agree with you and will add that generally, the idle will bounce around high/low every time the throttle is closed

Had that problem as well until I had Russ Potter rebuild my NH. Trying to get a good consistent idle was constant challenge. Set it, idled OK. Drive down the road and stop...idle off and car runs rough. Also seemed like I was always adjusting the mix while driving as well. Under light throttle it had to be leaned, under full throttle it had to be enriched. Extremely annoying. After the Potter magic, the car has run beautifully. Idle stays consistent and under most throttle conditions (except for cold starts), I never need to adjust it. Some of the best money I've spent on my car. And yes, it had a worn shaft and mixture screw.
