Hello,

Have someone experience wih a Stepney Wheel on a model T?
Is it useful?
And what’s the size?

That’s a new one for me…! Do you have any pics? Or original ads?

“The Stepney Spare Wheel for motor cars was invented by T. M. Davies in 1904. With his brother Walter, T. M. Davies owned an ironmongery business in Llanelli. At the time, cars were made without spare wheels and T. M. Davies had the idea of producing a clamp-on device to act as a spare wheel. The invention was instantly popular and produced in numbers at the Llanelli factory. Sales abroad were aided by agencies and later a tyre factory in Walthamstow. From 1922, the company became the Stepney Tyres Ltd and the Llanelli factory closed, as manufacturers began to supply spare wheels with their motor cars.”

I had a new-old-stock one for many years. I never did use it. There were four mountings which clipped over the rim edge once the fitted flat tyre was deflated. Two of the mountings were adjustable to make a firm fit. A special lug was provided to take a heavy leather strap. This wrapped around a spoke on the wheel so that the whole thing could not migrate around the wheel. It was cumbersome, heavy, damaging to paintwork on the wheel and not all that practical.

Regardless, they were much more popular in Europe, England, and I think some of their colonies than they were in the United States. But they were made and sold here as well. They rarely show up in American era photographs, however I have seen several European photographs showing them.
