Here is a question for the experts.

Those looking for an air filter, could the hot air tubs be filled loosely with a course gauze material, lightly oiled be used as a simple but effective air filter for dusty conditions?

I’d be worried that small shards of metal would be sucked into the carburetor and into the engine. Jim Patrick

A wire mesh oil filter is often used on military vehicles. Most early ones have an oil bath air filter that passes fresh air over an oil puddle collecting debris and providing an oily air into the carb intake. I have thought of something similar, but the hot exhaust manifold would give me pause with oily mesh or paper or nylon mesh filter media. Perhaps some sort of charcoal or non flamable filter media in that tube? As long as it does not restrict the air intake to the point of affecting performance, I don't see any harm in it.

I had a wasp next in my hot air stove pipe to the carb making a loud whistling noise recently, so stuff does get in there that I would not want sucked into my carb.

Why don’t someone that wants to get to making stuff for a T toolup and reproduce the United air cleaner?

With modern fuels, I don't use a hot air pipe, but this filter from Lang's https://www.modeltford.com/item/CARB-FILT.aspx Works well and the filter part is washable and can be replaced. Some heat may be transferred from the hogs head, but probably not enough to make any difference.
