So I'm helping a friend with his new to him 15 touring and really wants electric start. Normally this would be easy except he wants to keep the mag and thus my question.

The coil ring has a notch out for the starter. His mag is theory good working condition and the ring looks nearly new. Is there a reason I can't grind a notch in the 15 to allow a starter or do I need to get a new one?

Perhaps a silly reply to the question.

But once removed a starter that had a good portion of the nose (arrow) ground away to satisfy such install.

There is no reason you cant grind a notch in an earlier field coil ring. Did it to the last starter conversion, also a 15.
The notch is there to clear the shaft.
The starter nose housing is not involved & needs no modification.

Is coil an old one that has not ever been rebuilt? If so I would just replace it with a rebuilt one. Sure would hate to do all that and the coil goes out 1week after you get it all back together.

So true.
The field coil is too deep into a motor to risk failure.
In my case the field coil was restored during an earlier restoration.

Yes, you can notch the early field coil for a starter. Done it many times.

No it isn't and old coil, in fact it looks to have just been put in which is why I was wondering.
