When I pull the crank gas sprays out of the carb, it looks like it might be coming out of the side of the carb. It is an NH carb. Could this be caused by a stuck intake valve. If I leave the gas turned on and don't crank it no more fuel leaks out. it can sit overnight with the gas valve on and no gas leaks out, it seems like that would eliminate a stuck float as the cause. It is a 1919 non starter engine.

Maybe your choke spring on the carburetor is not working and the choke is staying partially or fully closed.

I believe if you "choke the crap" out of it is when it sprays. Likely a flooding situation.
On my '13 I give it 2 "prime yanks" and 3 "regular yanks" and they're actually what I call a "quarter yank". This is with switch off of course. Turn switch on and if she doesn't free start she will with just one quick yank. I have her tuned good.

Your situation could be normal as described. The extra fuel sneezes out from under the ID tag.
The question regarding a stuck valve...... Does it run well once you get it started, or does it constantly sneeze thru the inlet side of the carb?

I had a problem with a NH about a year ago. I couldn't get it to bring in enough gas when I choked it but after I did get it started it ran too rich and I could not get it to smooth out. What I found was that the choke valve was stuck part way closed but not all the way. So it would neither choke nor run right after it did start. A bit of carburetor cleaner and manual movement of the choke valve loosened it up and it has worked fine ever since. The fuel had turned to varnish while it was parked and there was some stuck in the shaft for the choke valve.

Thanks for all the reply's, all very helpful. As to the leaking valve question I will try to run a compression test soon. John Karvaly asks if the car runs well, I am not able to start it at all, maybe this is caused by the flooding as mentioned. Some one described the flooding issue as gas sneezing from behind the ID tag. That is actually where the gas comes out on my car. So i need to look into the flooding problem.

That "flooding" is caused by fuel being sucked up the intake during cranking & running back into the carb overfilling the bowl.
That sneeze of fuel is a normal sign that you choked & have plenty of fuel to fire. Try only 1 choke pull to start from sitting cold.

Since the needle valve is holding (no dripping when sitting), your flooding issue could be the float setting to high. (not as likely)
A closed choke plate (check the return spring) or a very rich mixture setting.
A compression test will find if you have a sticking valve.
