In placement of the bands in the transmission is the removalable ear required
to be oriented in a specific direction ? Towards the pedal side or opposite side or low speed
adjustment?
Or does it not matter ?

Thank you.

The removable ear must be on the driver's side or it can disconnect and fall in the transmission.

To be able to remove and install, you'll want the removable ear side on the driver's side when complete, that way you can slide the band, without the ear, all the way around inside the trans and "fish" it up the pedal side. With the ears on it gets harder.

For the record, if its RHD the opposite is the case. as the drums are still turning the same way as LHD its a simpler answer.
The reason being the room to work the bands around the drum is greater in both LHD and RHD hogshead because of the pedals position in the hogs head making it easier to do, some put them in the opposite way, it still works but is more difficult but nothing happens that matters.

Bands coming undone has never been a problem which has shown up. If they fell off they weren't put on correctly.

Its a myth that the ear can fall off, it can't. If the band is in place the only way the ear can come off is if the band can turn while the ear stays still that can't happen unless the band can grab the drum, and that can only happen when the pedal clamps the band ear to reduce the bands diameter.

John

This summer I was driving my red speedster in the homecoming tour. We crossed the Ohio River and headed up a 1000 foot hill. At the top my low pedal dropped to the floor and I lost all forward motion. That was it for me. That was it for me that day. Park it and ride all the way back to the museum with Dave Nolting and his wife, who were gracious enough to share their front seat with me. Dave's wife was kind enough to sit in the back.

When I opened up the transmission and started removing the hogshead the removable ear popped off the band and dropped. It was on the passenger side. Turns out I had 2 Ford bands and one generic band. Guess which one popped apart? They were all good and tight when we installed them backwards only a few months before.

Now all 3 bands are now installed with the removable ears on the LEFT (drivers side).
