Head bolts

completing the rebuild of an engine. Getting ready to install the head.
should there be lock washer used on the head bolts ?

Where's your service manual? None shown.
Unless........... you are using an aluminum head. Flat washers.

The Ford service manual can really help when working on a Model T. It’s always a good idea to clean out the bolt holes in the block when replacing a head. While your at it cleaning out the water circulation holes in the block and head also. Doing that might help a T cool better too.

No washers, you need maximum thread engagement in our old castings. Even when you have the head re-surfaced it pays to clean out the holes and reuse the original bolts. Just fit the head without a gasket first, to check that you still have clearance.
John make s good cautionary point. An alloy head has flat washers to protect the casting. With Z heads, and their washers, and the variations in the deck height of their machining, standard bolts can bee too short, as a friend of mine found out. The shallow engagement of two bolts stripped the thread out of the block.
