Strange metallic rattling solved !
For those who happened to see my previous post about a metallic rattle I was hearing on start up that went away after a few minutes. I determined it was in the rear of the car after climbing under immediately after starting. It was clear that it was exhaust related.
The exhaust pipe nut was tight. It actually sounded like there was a nut or other small part rattling around in the exhaust pipe. I removed the exhaust pipe and muffler assembly. Pipe was empty. But the interior baffles in muffler were loose and made a rattling sound when I gave the muffler a sharp whack with a rubber mallet. Last year I had purchased an earlier type vintage cast iron end muffler because I liked the way the exhaust pipe simply slides into the forward end.
Tightening the nut didn’t help. So I took the muffler apart and removed about 3/16” from one end of the outer shell on my belt sander. I reassembled the muffler and tightened the nut. Then gave one iron end some light taps of the rubber mallet around the perimeter and re tightened the nut. Tested it with the mallet and no rattle. Installed the pipe and muffler and that fixed the problem nicely. I had never used a cast iron end muffler prior to this, so it was a new “rattle” for me to diagnose.

The original or old style repops give a nice sound that I prefer over the later pressed steel style.

Yes, and that was another reason to use the more substantial cast iron end type in my ‘23.

Re: Strange metallic rattling solved !
Every time I drive my car (which is almost daily) it seems like I discover or hear a new rattle or sound. It’s quite the dilemma. Chasing them down is a full time job and part of the fun unless it’s a bad sound... and I’ve had my share of those for sure - multiple rod bearings, low drum explosion, broken piston, fan pulley bearing, generator bearing, etc.
It all begs the question: What’s the difference between a rattle snake and a Model T?

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I’m pretty sure about most of the sounds. This was so different because I have always used reproduction replacement type mufflers.
Here is Rochester they recently installed new traffic lights that have a sound for the deaf to know when it’s safe to cross. Some have a bird like tweet. But every so often you come up to an intersection that has a strange metallic clanking sound. Very unsettling when you’re in a T and it’s mixed with other ambient road sounds.

I just turn the radio up !!
Seriously, the top down helps quiet the "normal" squeaking, rattling and the various other noises. I heard all sorts of weird stuff with the side curtains on !!
Ambient sounds can be alarming, smells too !!
I was in my truck at the gas station the other day. I kept hearing the thump of a ghetto stereo,
still heard it going on down the road...The dill weed was following me !!

Scott, ... I like the sound of the $21 TSC 8N.mufflers on my T s. Makes me want to back the roadster up to a 2 bottom plow..
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people

Jeff, the difference between a rattle snake and a Model T is that you can't kill a Model T.
