Strange metallic rattling solved !

For those who happened to see my previous post about a metallic rattle I was hearing on start up that went away after a few minutes. I determined it was in the rear of the car after climbing under immediately after starting. It was clear that it was exhaust related.
The exhaust pipe nut was tight. It actually sounded like there was a nut or other small part rattling around in the exhaust pipe. I removed the exhaust pipe and muffler assembly. Pipe was empty. But the interior baffles in muffler were loose and made a rattling sound when I gave the muffler a sharp whack with a rubber mallet. Last year I had purchased an earlier type vintage cast iron end muffler because I liked the way the exhaust pipe simply slides into the forward end.
Tightening the nut didn’t help. So I took the muffler apart and removed about 3/16” from one end of the outer shell on my belt sander. I reassembled the muffler and tightened the nut. Then gave one iron end some light taps of the rubber mallet around the perimeter and re tightened the nut. Tested it with the mallet and no rattle. Installed the pipe and muffler and that fixed the problem nicely. I had never used a cast iron end muffler prior to this, so it was a new “rattle” for me to diagnose.
