Should there be a gasket under the valve cover for a Frontenac overhead valve head?? I've got an oil soaked typewriter felt above the rocker assembly. I dont want oil drooling down the sides on my engine.

I sealed mine down, to oil the pad I drilled and tapped for 3 clean grease cups. Simply unscrew the cap, pour in the oil and you're done.

Maybe a similar application... My '24 Buick has a looong rocker cover. It leaked oil too. On the advice of a "Buick guy", my dad made a gasket out of 1/4" thick, rubberized cork. It's been in place for over 30 years and works great. It's held in place with Permatex on the bottom side only. The thickness allows it to conform well with any irregularities in the cover.

I agree with what Jerry suggested. Rubberized cork works very well. If you have a company that makes gaskets near you, I have bought and most of the time gave what they refer to as drops. It also helps if you make sure the flange of the cover is flat.

Chad, I have thought about drilling and tapping the cover to install some oilers, but hate to put holes in the cover. However, to oil the rockers, the hood needs to be removed, then the cross-over carburetor heat-pipe has to be removed, and finally the valve cover has to be removed, then i can give the rocker assembly a couple of squirts. Then, put it all back together again...

For the gasket I bought a sheet of cork material from the local tractor store. I traced the valve cover and cut the material to fit. Still working on the engine rebuild, so I haven't run it yet.

FWIW, my valve cover, valve chest cover and intake block off plate are the reproduction aluminum parts. They were true rough castings (rough and warped). I took them to a local engine shop and they surfaced the mating surfaces.

Thanks,
