when replacing the 17-22 wood fire wall with the low steel replacement fire wall are spacer washers needed betwern the frame mounting brackets and the metal firewall? If so what are its dimensions. Thanks for your support. Jp

Steel firewall uses different brackets.

Humble. You are referring the ones with the square holes instead of round. Yes I know of that change. Thank you.

Jack - somewhere, I believe in the Service Bulletins there was an article referring that - Ford suggested using the outer radiator thimble as spacers (4).

As luck would have it, I have both an early 23(wood FW) & a 23 with steel firewall.
The difference is 1/2"
I like the idea of using the top radiator mount caps over a couple of wood spacers.

If staying with the wood firewall to frame brackets all that is needed is two wooden spacers to make up the difference in thickness of the two firewalls.

As has been stated it was common practice to use the upper radiator mount thimble as a spacer, with 4 being needed. I guess you could grind the open end of the 1/2 inch thimble down the 1/16 of a inch to get to 7/16 of a inch if you so desired, but generally there is enough play in frame to steel firewall mount to not make that necessary.

If wood wood be no good, perhaps we should be replacing all the wooden spacers under all the metal running boards with radiator thimbles.
In the firewall application I know which solution wood look less like an interim patch-up job.

In Trent Boggess's article posted by Dan, he stated...
".... the Ford engineers designed a round 7/16 inch spacer that WOOD go between the new steel dash and the mounting points on the earlier dash to frame brackets."
Trent's subconscious led him to the better solution than that of the engineers.
