Does anyone know anything about this car?

Post by Gib163 » Mon Jul 01, 2019 7:27 am

It’s one of the nicest (in my eyes) brass rad streamlined cars I have seen.

But I can only find this photo.

It looks like someone has been very creative with fotoshop, the pictures are exactly positioned the same, relative to the background, but i see a lot of differences in the photo's, like diskwheels, the radiator, a taillight on the tailend of the cone, colours .
I suppose whoever done it took the pic from the RM auction site and changed it to his liking
I like em both, by the way ;)

Good eye Leo. I hadn't noticed the differences. It looks like the RM one is the retouched one. Curious.

If you look at where the hood and radiator meet there's a strange shadow... Something just doesn't look right about the RMS one, maybe the way the wheels are a bit too tight and the background looks more cut and pasted? Either way, I'd have liked to see the car in person, not the composite picture we're looking at, because it looks like someone took a picture of the car and then overlaid the parts from one onto the other one and massaged them together to for some reason. If you look at the shadow of the LR wheel, where the sun is going through the wheel to the ground, and then the front where it was filled in...

Sorry, but no. No no no. Too much hinky going on there. You sure it's not a 4-1 post?

The RM photo is the doctored one. Several things but most obvious is RR wheel shadow is of spoke wheels with a disc wheel. I'm sure it looked like that when sold, with the very lovely wire wheels being sold separate from the car. With such a nice backdrop it is not surprising that the "freshened" car was superimposed in pieces over the older photo.

Another view of the "original":

Sure look like Simplex wire wheels to me. Very interesting and unique hub/hub nut/wheel center design. If my suspicions are correct, these wheels have had new wing type hub nuts made, along with some sort of brass center cap. Someone clearly went thru a bit of effort on this set... wonder why they were taken off?

From what i see Scott is right, but what would be the reason to put a 'doctored' photo on the official RM site ? that strikes me as a very odd thing to do...

Leo

I suspect the car sold exactly the way the photo showed...it was just never photographed there in that configuration at that location...I suspect the location (in it's prior configuration) was far superior to that of a warehouse photo or wherever it was stored prior to sale. Additionally, photoshopping the wheels in was far cheaper than a professional photo shoot.

As far as why the wire wheels disappeared...it is no mystery to me...that car on it's own merits would fetch the $41K that it did, with or without the wire wheels. If I could put on $900 disc wheels and sell the wires for $6K, I'd do it.

For some cars, the wire wheels would be the ONLY reason to buy the car...not so in this case. That BUB body is georgeous, in my opinion.
