One of our members was having issues keeping the fan belt on the pulley. I used an old trick of turning it around. Now it stays where it belongs.

Cheap fix to a frustrating problem. I forgot who told me KISS just might solve your problem.

I forget the technical reason why this works. Some sort of flaw in the manufacturing process
that makes one side of the belt tighter or smaller than the other side.

Mis-aligned pulleys can stretch one side of a flat fan belt, rather than it being a manufacturing fault. This happens more often on the cars with the longer fan arm. The remedy is to check and possibly reset the fan arm so the fan shaft is parallel to the crankshaft.
