Starter field coil wiring

Cannot find my T electrical book. Have taken 2 starters apart the last couple of days and found differences as to how the field coil To brush terminal brushes were hooked up.
On the first one , one field lead was hooked up to a insulated brush and the other lead was hooked up to the next brush holder which is 90 degrees apart.
On the other starter the field leads were hooked to brush holders 180 degrees apart. Next time I get out there I will test to see which brushes are grounded and which ones are not.
It would seem like one field lead would be hooked to a insulated brush to make it positive and the other lead to a grounded brush so a magnetic field is created in the field coils and opposing magnetic field in the armature to make it spin.
May have to drag out my old tech school books from 60 years ago or the Motors manuals from the 30^s.
I do not believe in sending things out to rebuilders when you can learn a lot and enjoy it more doing it yourself. I have repaired and rebuilt bigger equipment than a 6 volt starter , so I should be able to work on this,
