Truss Rod Question

Post by Belliott3 » Sun Jul 07, 2019 7:34 pm

Were both truss rods straight on the 1910 Model T like they were on the '09 T's?

If you are talking about across the rear axle, I know of no Model T that came with them. Pre-T's did, but not T's. I'd say suit yourself.

I believe Mr, Elliot is referring to the rods between the running board brackets.

FWIW

Bill,

Sorry I don't recall when your 1910 was manufactured - but I'm sure you have that information. From the Fun Projects site at: http://www.funprojects.com/pdf/CA4816.PDF they have a detailed description of when the rear truss rod was designed with a bend at both ends to help provide additional clearance for the driveline. Click on "History of the Part/Certificate of Authenticity." The drawing was dated August 27, 1909. They estimated it would be 30 to 90 days to put the part into production. They know of documentation that the new rear rod was available on 22 Jan 1910. Unlike other times when Ford would continue to use up the old parts -- that was not necessary in this case. The straight rod worked for the front running board brackets so as soon as the new rod was available it could have been used with no left over older stock parts.

Thanks, Hap, that certainly clears things up! Since my car was made 2-4-10 I'm certain it would have had the new design bent rear truss rod. I always appreciate those who are willing to help a fellow T guy out - thanks again!

Bill,

You are welcome. I'm glad I could help. And a big thanks to John Regan for doing the initial research in the archives so Fun Projects could build accurate reproductions of the truss rods as well as other parts for our cars. Also a thank you to the current owners of Fun Projects for continuing to produce the products as well as making the information available on the web site.
