Steering wheel wrap finish

Just got done wrapping the steering wheel on my speedster. Wondering what the best finish is to put on the jute. Shellack, varnish...?

I saw this on the forum several years ago and used cotton rope/ twine for this wheel.
I applied spar varnish, as I had a can handy.
As you can see, it turned the cord a light shade of yellow.

It’s been a long time… but think I used spar varnish as well. Was gonna rewrap it a while back cuz it was looking pretty grungy… but a little simple green brought it right back! After a few drives with greasy hands the yellow will calm down quickly
