I don't see any address...

The population of Mulberry is under 1300. I expect it won't be hard to find.

Labor Day Monday! Don't think I've ever seen an auction on labor day in Montana.
Wish I could go.
I should have bought a little motorhome instead of a better haybine, it would be fun to drive back there, go to the auction and old car festival.

Now THAT is funny ! I was wondering if the parking lot might need re-striping, or
if the streetlight wiring is up to code, myself !

Good point, Steve. I was wondering if it the auction was actually down town? Or, if maybe it will be at the owners residence?

A few members of the Indy 500 chapter of the MTFCA spent another day helping Steve's family set up for the auction. I really don't know where to begin talking about the collection of parts, cars, speed stuff, cores and rare parts that run the gamut 1909 thru 26/27. You have to see it to believe how much Steve collected.

Mulberry is a very small town as already referenced. Parking will be available at 3-4 churches within a few blocks of the auction site. There is also a bank and other places available to park since most businesses will be closed for the holiday. There will be a lot of street parking as well.

Auction site address is 145 Jefferson Road in Mulberry, IN. It is just South of IND 38. As Mike and Kenny have stated, Steve has a huge collection. Everything from brass era to 27. There are a lot of unique and interesting items. Study the photos on the auction link above. Bring a trailer and spend the day. You will not be disappointed.

In the picture after the one with all the axle halves, is that in the middle of the shelf a stack of "commercial " fenders for hucksters and station wagons ?

Looks like 26-27 front fenders. Hard to tell the rears but some are 26-27.

I was planning on attending, but now am thinking against it. I attend a lot of farm auctions where there is usually plenty of open space to accommodate parking, room to display the goods, handle a crowd, port-a-potties, and a food vendor. Not sure how this one can handle any of those things. It is pushing it for me to make the 7 hour drive and stay overnight in a hotel, but the deal breaker is a 10% buyers premium, never had one of those at a farm auction. Only time I ever encountered a buyers premium was at an auction with upholstered theater seating, A/C, and everyone wore suits and had all their teeth.

It's like a market I once saw. All the prices had a little +10% after them. It was located in a poor neighborhood to take advantage of unsophisticated shoppers and suck as much money as possible out of people who could least afford it.

TERMS:
Cash, Credit Card, 10% Buyers Premium (Onsite), 18% Buyers Premium (Online Bidding)

Are you sure that 10% premium is not just for onsite credit card use?

I have left auction sites after finding out they had a buyers premium and will never return to another of that auctioneers sales for any reason. At least this one gives advance warning so I can decide to either stay away or reduce the amount I am willing to spend. I always have a top bid in mind before the bidding starts when its something I need or want so its easy to deduct from what I feel the item is worth to me. Why should the buyer pay for the sellers expense? It feels like a tax and I pay more than my fair share of taxes already. A buyers premium kills it for me 99% of the time and I will not use this type of service to sell my stuff when the time comes. Plenty of auctioneers out there to choose from who don't do this to the buyers.

The general thinking in the auction business about the buyers premium is that people are used to paying sales tax so it doesn't bother them; it helps on the expenses; anybody who is bothered by it is welcome to bid less; etc.

My take on it having seen it become more and more common here over the years is that it is a way for the auctioneer to book an auction by quoting a lower commission to the seller; figuring they will make it up on the back end with the buyers premium.

My next take on it is that if the are so incompetent they have to buy an auction by being low bidder they will cost the seller plenty of money no matter what they do.

I am not the low bidder auctioneer. We do not, never have and never will add any kind of a buyers premium to the hammer price of an auction. I charge a fair commission to the seller based on being one of the few people in Montana who have the track record I do, the knowledge I do and the experience I do as well as knowing a large number of the potential buyers personally -- their name, what they collect, etc. If that isn't worth what I think I'm worth then I am happy to let them hire the low bidder.

I have had 425 commercial auctions in over 20 counties in Montana + North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming & Colorado in the last 37 years. I just turned down a collector tractor auction because I will not bid against the other auctioneers who think they are worth less than I am, will not put up with jerks either as seller or buyer and don't like working with anybody who isn't happy with who he hired.

I just paid 13.5% buyers premium at an auction because there was a tractor I wanted but it left a bad taste in my mouth to give them another $135 over the hammer price.

We do not have sales tax in Montana, if you go to an auction in North Dakota they collect sales tax in addition to the buyers premium. 18% is not uncommon.

Once again I’m not getting Anything out of this sale, so stay home if you’re worried about the buyers premium. In central Indiana 10% seems the going rate for buyers premium but a couple places I go is 13% or higher. I factor that in when I’m bidding. In Indiana the sales tax is 7%. So some of these auctions can basically be 20%+ out the door. This sale is on the estates property so there shouldn’t be any sales tax on anything other than a vehicle with a title being licensed in Indiana. Other states may vary. I’m verifying that with the auctioneer though.

I’m sure the people questioning the buyers premium don’t understand how much work is involved in the set up for the sales. They auctioneers don’t just waltz in and start selling the day of the sale and then take their money and run. There were 4 building that were condensed to 1. This stuff didn’t move itself. The auctioneer has had his people, trailer and other equipment up there moving stuff on numerous days. Myself and others from the club have been helping to organize and identify items for this sale on 2 Saturdays. Some of us will be helping the day before and day of the sale. The auctioneer has had a number of 80 mile round trips to take pictures and meet with executors plus putting out sales flyers and ads.

All of this stuff is going to sell. You’re whining isn’t going to change any of that. I’m thinking there’s going to be some incredible deals.

Well, I don't think I am whining. I believe this is an open forum. I believe I offered some perspective based on more experience in the auction business than anybody else I know of on here. Take it for what you paid for it.

When I go teach at auction school or conventions where the auctioneers gather for training and whatever, buyer's premiums are a hot topic of discussion. Most of the new auctioneers, particularly those who offer Internet bidding charge a premium. Most, but not all, of the older and longer term auctioneers don't here in Montana.

It is a tough business. You have the sellers to make happy, you have the buyers to make happy, you have the crew to pay, you have the state to deal with in some places, you have the legal hassels of titles, bills of sale, Uniform Commercial Code compliance and the lien holders such as banks, credit card companies, ex wives, people who show up with a title to something you listed for sale, etc. In some states, such as North Dakota, where I am one of the very few legally licensed out of state auctioneers, you have the compliance, bonding, labor and escrow laws to contend with as well as the disgruntled local auctioneer that didn't get the sale badmouthing you to the buyers and filing complaints with the state.

The success and longevity rate in the auction business out of the people who attend auction school after ten years is less than 5%. Yup, FIVE percent. There is a reason.

While I don't charge a buyers premium and believe I have valid and experiential reasons for not doing so, there are people that do. It is their choice not mine. I choose to attend auctions or not more based on where they are, when they are, what is there and who the auction company is rather than whether they charge a buyers premium.

In my opinion and the way I run my business based on several things such as Montana being right in the middle of Harvest, all the car shows and other recreational activities going on here in the the tourist capital of the West, I would not even consider having an auction on Labor Day. But they didn't ask me, it is not my decision and they don't care if I show up from Montana in Indiana or not. It is their business and they can run it any way they want, which is exactly the way I run mine.

Stan, you’re last paragraph pretty much sums it up and you absolutely right. Only thing we don’t have going on in Indiana is anything close to a harvest. Most the corn and beans didn’t get planted until late June early July due to all the rain we’ve had.

I may go anyway. If so, I'll just lower my bidding limits a little and probably buy less than I would at a normal auction. Maybe the high rollers will let a few crumbs fall off the table for us peons.

Just got back from this auction. It was a hoot and I’ve never seen so much T stuff so well organized and collected. I went to get some very specific things and got everything I wanted, was very happy with the quality I got, and very happy with the price. But I’ll tell ya, it was a LONG day....bookended by a some long days on the road to get there. But enjoyed it thoroughly, both seeing the “stuff” and talking/joking with fellow T’ers!
