Opening a Fake 6v battery case

Post by msandefur » Sun Jul 21, 2019 1:56 pm

I have one of these battery cases that contain a 6v Optima battery inside, but looks like a period battery. I’d like to open the case and take the battery out for replacement, but can’t figure out how to open the case. Has anyone out there ever opened one of these?

With the post orientation in your picture, I would be inclined to think that would be a size 2 battery commonly used in model A's and V8 Fords. Hiding an Optima battery inside a original style case is new to me.

They still sell Optima cases. Just search Tbay for “6v optima battery case” and you’ll see some. They don’t have “Ford” on them, but they look a lot better in an antique car. My case does not appear to open the same way. There are no visible seams.
The Ford cases were sold over twenty years ago.

An Optima battery will fit diagonally across a standard Model T battery box as pictured above. You will have to raise the height of the Optima so it is level with the battery box. You will also need to fabricate handles for each end if you plan to have handles for the lid.
