Installing Manifolds

Is the manifold installation tool sold by Langs (#3066MTG) for $29.95 worth having? Does it make a difficult job easier? Can the job be done without the tool?

The job can be done easily without a tool if you have a helper, or with some effort by yourself. A manifold clamp with one arm cut off makes a good tool.

I just turn the two outer clamps sideways and install the exhaust manifold first then the intake and two inner clamps, no cutting involved. Does the tool work, I am sure it does, is it needed, not really. There are work around's.

I have coffee cans of both style clamps so cutting a couple off didn't hurt my feelings none but I do reverse of Mark's installation procedure - I install intake first to verify ring & gland seating then install exhaust as you can also verify seating looking down across the manifold - you can't see the intake if you mount the exhaust first.

I got a couple of these from Erik B when we did my tranny. Boy did they help while I redid my Winfield linkage last week. Intake was on an off a dozen times until I got it right. In hindsight, I should have removed the exhaust manifold and done it last as you suggested though. Would have saved some grief for sure! Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. I got the answer I was hoping to get, I don't need to buy the tool to do the job. I can hold on to my $30.00 for something I really need. I hope to be installing both manifolds in a couple of weeks That is if I can finds enough time between Drs. appointments. I hope to get the engine back in my 1919 touring this summer.
