Steering Column Removal

Replacing the firewall in my 21 and can’t get the steering column out. Following the Model T bible, but is the timer rod supposed to be bent like this? It’s the only thing holding the bracket on.

Thanks. Bent it back with a torch and got the bracket off.

There should be some images in the service manual showing close up pictures of the column. The timer and gas rods should be straight so the bracket can be pulled off. While your checking things out there is a bushing inside the bracket that probably need to be replaced because of excessive wear over the years.

I have no idea. This little truck has a 100 years of neglect I'm running through. Shoot, when I found it, the radiator was missing the nut for the driver's side mount, so my great-grandfather fixed it by jamming the post sideways in the frame and hooking the radiator on it.

Yeah, I looked at that and the picture wasn't all that clear in my book. Also looked at the bushing and it seems to be okay. After all, it wasn't driven after the 50s and even then, it was a sawmill. When I found the thing, the key for the steering wheel shaft was missing too.

Do not miss this opportunity to replace the bushing in the bracket. It is a source of slackness in the steering which will be with you forever, even if the entire front end is rebuilt.
Additionally, there is a felt ring that is packed into a groove at the top of the bracket...the original is likely petrified or missing. Replace it...it's cheap.

I have an OT engine that has a piece of inner tube under a few boards stacked up against a fuel tank brace as a frost plug had rusted out!
I want to see more of your '21.

Well, this is it when we pulled it out of the back of the shop where it sat since I was a little boy. This was last summer though

Drive out the pin for the timer rod lever, and everything will slide off. Then the steering column will come out of the firewall.

Thanks! Gotta say that I like it more in its current state simply because I've gotten to drive it around, despite a cracked low speed drum.
