I thought I’d finish disassembling this 1920 block this morning and the front cam bearing set screw looked like part of it was broken off. I then found a ball bearing inside to hold the bearing. I’ve never seen that before. I suppose that it was a fix from not having another screw but I don’t know how one of those screws could get damaged in the first place.

an undersized pin on the screw or an oversized hole on the bearing can lead to quite a bit of knocking. I think someone down on the farm, in the past, applied a little American Genius to his car and solved the knocking problem.

God love the American Farmer. Nothing they can't fix with a roll of wire and an old coffee can full of nuts, bolts and other odds and ends. Every time I see one of these fixes it makes me smile.

I think that the pin gets damaged from the camshaft hammering it went the cam moves back and forth. I was leaning toward building up the pin by welding or maybe brazing some material on it and then fitting it to the hole. I new pin would not change the clearance much. The nearing is still in good shape, so I do not want to change that to get a better hole. Mike
