Success with total rebuild/recore of 1921 radiator

Post by AdminJeff » Fri Jan 18, 2019 7:18 pm

Normally I'd just add to existing post but we're hunting down a nasty bug in the forum and it appears to happen when doind a new posting with attachments and then making changes. so here goes.

Got the radiator completely assembled and leak free today - we started Monday. No idea why Brassworks is out 6 weeks. total cost out the door was $700.

Total Rookie move - I just noticed that I forgot the fan... ok, back to the garage!

Well Steve, let’s face it. Sometimes in our exuberance to get something done we have a senior moment, or two , or three.... I’m having them a lot lately... and it just a fact of getting older. So, because of that, I went nose to tail on the car tonight with it in the air on the lift just to make sure I didn’t forget anything before the tour tomorrow. And I found a few things I had missed- mostly cotter pins I’d forgotten to install.

When I raced Porsche 911’s (before my stroke), we called it nut and bolting the car. We literally touched every nut and bolt on the car with a wrench to make sure everything was safe and sound. Clearly the stakes were a lot higher in wheel to wheel racing at 150mph but the same principles apply to getting a 100 year old car ready for a tour.

If brass works is out 6 weeks! I wonder what's up, there usually out 6 months! That's what mine took 10 years ago ofcoarse it was brass!

It's good to hear the Brassworks is selling cores again.

That I don’t know. They were out 6weeks for new radiators.

Jeff you will be happy you bave a good cooling system. I re cored mine a while ago and never looked back. No adding water before every drive or stopping to add water. Much more enjoyable.
Looks great.

I actually dropped by the Brassworks on Fri to order a new radiator for my 14. Lee said 5-6 weeks and he would move the id plate over from my old radiator. He said this is the slow part of the year for them, otherwise it would be a longer lead time. Wow, does he have a lot of radiators there being repaired and rebuilt for a wild variety of vehicles.

Amen to that. I experienced all of that and more today on my mini-tour. The car ran cooler than it ever has in the past.
