When cranking to start, it “slips” out of neutral . .

and into gear. This makes cranking virtually impossible. Starting is only
accomplished by depressing the clutch pedal. What adjustments are needed to
prevent this ?

Teeth on the quadrant and the pawl tooth on the handbrake are all rounded off from 95 years of ZZZZZIIIIICCCCKKKK! Pulling on hand brake and allowing pawl to bounce across and wear out every tooth there. Badbadbad technique.

Hi, James. What Scott said. For temporary you might slip a piece of 1" pvc pipe a few inches long down over the handbrake handle so it will hit the dash and prevent the lever from going forward into high gear. Please don't ask how I know this.

Right on. Push in the release just a little to avoid the RaaaaaaaaaaaK!
I guess some didn’t learn to do that way back when. I have 4 frames and on one the ratchet is almost smooth but just enough to maybe have held the brake lever.

Just for your all safety.
Do not try to repair the quadrand and pawl just replace it with the hard steel ones the part dealers offer.
