Hello everyone,

Has anybody here successfully changed a clutch spring without pulling the engine from the car? The T manual mentions that it is possible, but I have been told that it is oversimplified and doesn't work very well. I was originally going to pull the engine to replace the clutch pack and spring, but I read here recently that it is better the start with the spring first as it is unlikely the clutch needs to be replaced under most circumstances.

It is not easy

I can't remember all the details, it took the better part of a day, with three of us, Dad, brother and me. We got it done and it has been fine since.

Yes, it can be done but not without some choice words and some help. Years ago I had installed a watch clutch and as use the round spring that came with the clutch pack. After some time the clutch spring had moved which equated to losing spring pressure causing a problem. So I got a regular square cut spring to replace and what's clutch has worked flawlessly since.

The spring can be replaced but in my opinion is a bigger pain than removing the engine.

Basically you remove the rear axle
Then remove the hogs head
Next remove all the block to pan bolts except the front four which are just loosened.
Now lift the block and transmission.

After replacing clutch spring and maybe disks you reverse the process. My concern is not causing any oil leaks, well not too many.

On a Texas T party a few years back Ross Lilleker replaced the clutch on a club members 1916 touring by removing the radiator and hogs head and sliding the engine forward. I think it took a little more than half a day.

if jack stands had been available, it could have been done more easily by removing the rear axle.

I wonder how many guys replaced the clutch spring on the side of the road like he did back in the day! I guess if you have to you have to.
