So there is a hole right in the bottom of number 3 dipper pan... I was driving around town, backed in the garage and WHAT??? I noticed nothing while driving.sounded fine no rattles ,or bangs ,nothing...any thought or ideas as to what made that whole ?

While following a friend of mine on tour years ago, I noticed him leaving a very similar stripe in the road. So I quickly sped up along side and flagged him over. After a quick investigation we discovered a broken external oil line. We added his extra quart of oil, but when I went to get the extra quart of oil out of my car... I noticed 2 stripes in the road leading up to both of our cars! What timing! Both of our mag post oil lines broke within moments of one another! At least we (and you) cought the leak while it was still leaking... and not after!

It's an odd whole, looks like a mouse chewed a whole in my pan about the size of a bb. It doesn't look like it was punch from the inside out, or outside in.. um.. I'll need to wait till morning till it cools off and I can open it up..I won't be able to sleep tonight

I vote for a rust pit letting go.

I prefer bread crumbs when I want to mark my trail. One good thing about using oil though -- the birds don't eat it.

I'm with Donnie - probably sat with water in the dips at some time in it's life & finally "vibrated" through !

Acid damage in the bottoms of the dips is very common. Sometimes the only thing sealing them up is dirt on the outside of the pan.

your close-up pretty much shows it was corrosion of some sort. With no thinning of the metal around it, it was probably a defect in the metal that allowed intergranular corrosion. Clean it up, weld it shut and thank your lucky stars you shut it down when you did! Then buy a lottery ticket...

Oil floats on water, so it sat for awhile with some water in the pan. Not uncommon on cars that have sat dormant for long periods of time

Ok.. welded the hole shut.. we're back on the road..
