Leaving the Rail Side in Sanford,Mi i was shocked to see a strange/but very nice looking T with a Kansas plate on it. I found the people inside and was told it was a Ames 1919 on a Ford T chassis! Bud DeLong.

Was it a tan color? Gary Hylton's car?

Yes it was tan with darker fenders? The people live in Midland,Mi and the car was his dad's who was killed in a wreck.Sorry but i do not remember their names but from the people they spoke of they had been around old iron for at least 20 years. I have been reading the forum every day but for a spell i could not post? Must have been a brain fart! It was a Jim Dandy of a car and it looked later than 1919,so was it the chassis date or the Ames body? When i saw the Kansas plate,I thought of Steve Jelf. Bud DeLong.

Here is a picture of Gary Hylton’s Ames Touring that was posted on this forum in March.

I took the above picture and posted it earlier at the time of Gary Hylton's untimely death. He was very proud of this car and among his several Ts I believe this was his favorite driver. Modified for reliability, he annually drove this car to his summer home in Minnesota from Prairie Village, Kansas. He was a great friend and I'm glad to know his "AMES" is being enjoyed.

Adam,Yes that is it! I asked seeing how the disc wheels had 3 lug bolts if the might have been chevy but he said he thought they were Ames. A very nice modern car for 1919! Bud.

I believe the 3 lug were indicative of Disteel wheels.

It’s one of the most interesting, unique T’s around.

I have been on tours with the blue Ames cloverleaf touring pictured. It was owned by Don Lasater.

kinda makes you wonder if Edsel and the design team got their inspiration for the Model A radiator shell from the Ames.

There is a lot of change in the two Ames pictured. My guess would be the model A radiator shell got it's look;s from the Lincoln? Bud. PS,was the Ames also sold and used with other brands? Bud.

Ames built a lot of custom bodies for the Model T chassis. That Cloverleaf style was unique to Ames, plus they made many other styles.

RE; "That Cloverleaf style was unique to Ames" Murry's book has an over head view of one. I have thought that if I had room and talent, it would be a great body to copy.

The Model A was styled by Edsel as a "baby Lincoln". Lincoln was his project from the time Ford bought the marque from Henry Leland. It would be interesting to know if Edsel borrowed styling cues from Ames for the Lincoln in the years before Model A production. Anyone know ?
