27 fan pulley

Post by Inthegarage » Tue Aug 20, 2019 11:59 am

The fan pulley has about 3/16th in and out play on it. I just rebuilt it last winter with all new and fitted parts. I would like to remove it to find out what’s going on. Can I sneak the pulley by the radiator without removing the return neck? Or do I have to drain the antifreeze and remove everything?
Thanks

On my 26, I was able to sneak it out of there.

Before you take it off. Have you tried tightening the thru bolt first? Also look at your fan belt, is one edge more worn then the other indicating something is out of alignment. Could be that if the belt is too tight it is pulling the pulley in one direction wearing the bushing flange faster then it should. Flat belts do not need as much tension as a V belt, just enough to turn the fan (and water pump if so equipped). Another check before taking it off, are the pulleys in alignment both vertical and horizontal?
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I did check the tension of the belt and it’s not tight at all. If the thru bolt was loose wouldn’t the belt be out of adjustment?

I haven't attempted that on my '26, but removing the eccentric with the fan assembly might require less 'space' than removing the bolt and fan from the eccentric. Taking the fan blade off the hub first should give more room too, but removing those 4 machine screws and the gasket on the blade presents it's own challenges I expect. The end play in a '26-'27 fan hub is minimal if the felt seal isn't totally worn away. Best, jb

John, did you install the felt seal and cup washer? If not that would account for about 3/16" play.

Yes I did. But I think you should be able see it. I didn’t look with a flashlight yet, should you be able to see cup washer?
Later lm going to check the adjustment nut just to make sure it didn’t loosen up You gotta check the easy stuff first.

Yes, the cup washer should be visible - if not & you're seeing brass, that's the bushing !

I checked the adjusting bolt and it’s tight. So tomorrow’s job it’s off with the fan :D
