OT NY Modified racing

Post by NHUSA » Mon Jan 21, 2019 1:53 pm

This is way OT but I thought some of you might like this.
Someone sent me this drawing of modified race cars from the 60's that is great.

I remember most of them and had a personal relationship with many of them.
For example I helped which chassis design on Roger Treichler green 74
Richie Evan, Orange 61, I spent a lot of time talking with Richie about how to keep those big fat tires flat on the track surface.
Richie was one of my favorite drivers and a great person.
The 99 Valliant belonged to Jeff Bodine - Jeff went to HS in Waverly NY with my wife and we would always talk a bit when at the track
The 11 is Ray Hendrick from VA always a threat to win His cars were immaculate.
38 Jerry Cook strong competitor. He swapped Nascar Modified Champion with Richie over many years. He became NASCAR 's competition Administrator
15 is Bugsy Stevens out of Rehoboth Mass - I raced against him in the mid 60's at Norwood Arena.
3 belonged to Lenny Boehler - he drove a bit but was a fantastic mechanic Bugsy Drove for him for many years

Wonderful detail. I would think those who drove and watched those should be having fun on a forum like ours.
Thanks for the look.
Rich
When did I do that?

Rich,

When I saw it, the first thing I thought of was you and your drawings.

Thank You for posting the drawing it is very realistic. I enjoyed your comments about may of NY legendary drivers. I attended many racers throughout NY in the 60s and 70s. I was part of a dirt modified team for many years racing at dirt tracks all over Northern and central NY. I have seen most all of the drivers you mentioned in competition at Utica Rome Speedway, Albany Saratoga, Fonda and many others.

Great post Fred! Thanks to my Dad I grew up watching those guys race and spent many weekends at Shangri-La as well as many other area tracks. The "Rapid Roman" was the best! Below is a picture of my youngest son sitting with Geoff Bodine at Chemung Speedrome last summer.
