Magnet Clamp Broke

Post by Budreau » Fri Aug 30, 2019 10:27 pm

I was driving home and the magneto stopped working. After some troubleshooting I pulled off the magneto post and discovered that a stray magnet clamp was disrupting the connection.

I pulled the hogs head off and found the clamp. Luckily I caught this in time before any serious damage was done. Flywheel teeth, gears, and other parts look unaffected.

So my question. Before resorting to pulling the engine, any hope of replacing the magnet clamp and screw with the engine in place?

The good news is that I can easily replace the bands. I'll take the win where I can get it.

No hope. Flywheel and transmission have to be removed and once you put the new screw in, the height has to be set. If one screw let loose, I’d go ahead and replace them all. Takes a few specialized tools but it can be done in your garage.

Thanks. Good suggestion, I'll play it safe and replace all screws and plates. What tools do you recommend I order to make the job easier and accurate? Do I need to tool below?

Chad, the same thing happened to me, but I was 2500 miles from home crossing the Nullabor Plain going to Perth in Western Australia. We were travelling in a group, so we ended up on the trouble truck heading into Kalgoorlie. The best part of that deal was ending up in the workshop of an ex-patriate South Australian geologist who was working at the big pit goldmine. Our whole touring group descended on his place for a barbecue meal and a most welcome swim in his pool, while the T motor came out and the screw and plate were replaced.

Chad

I would strongly suggest that you:

1. change all aluminum spools with new ones when the screws are replaced. From a metal fatigue and practical point of view, they are at end of life.
2. find a good original undamaged keeper and replace the one that came off and is damaged. Repro keepers are not made from as tough material as original and will warp considerably when tightened down making accurate mag ring spacing difficult with one new one and all but impossible if they all are replaced.

I'm off to an auction on Monday in Indiana. Hoping to find some tools and goodies for this rebuild. Otherwise I'll order parts Tuesday. Probably add a new flywheel for good measure, I see some teeth look a little worn. Thanks all!

Or you could just rotate the ring gear 90 degrees. If you go the frugal way you’ll need to mark the ring gear and flywheel so you don’t put it back in the same place, oh make sure you put the ring gear on the correct side. Don’t ask me how I know to check that.
