What have you done with your T in September?
Put in a new (old stock) set of Autolite plugs and checked the points gap. Found I had been a little generous with the grease cup on my Thomas distributor shaft...just about to start slinging it around
I wiped it all off and cleaned the points with brake clean after a little sandpaper. Gap was a little wide, set to 0.020", started right up and now waiting to see if it rains for a test drive.

Drove the ‘26 roadster to church today...
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

Finished up the August overhaul on the 23 Speedster and took it for a run. I kind of miss all the knocking it did. Well maybe not. This little speedster runs right along.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Temperature finally cooled down enough here in West Texas to shoot primer on the TT. Good to see my body work doesn’t show through. Most of the lower panels looked like they had been “adjusted” with a ball peen hammer once I got the very thick 70’s bonds stripped off.

Painted the body on my 15 runabout project. I've also been color sanding and polishing the fenders and door. It gets pretty crowded when painting the inside of the car!

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Not nearly as much as some of the above, but have put new float valves in two of my T's and rebuilt the sediment bulb, turn off on one of them. Also took off a de-mountable to pump up the tire on the third one. Tomorrow, I plan to take them all out for a run and see how they do. Getting ready for a 3 day tour in a couple weeks to Big Bear Lake in California. I will only use one of the cars on the tour, but have been very busy this summer and finally got some time to work on my own cars.

I was able to start for the first time my 1911 touring after 8 years of restoration. Sound magical. Thank you RV Anderson who's able to adjust my early coils. I can`t wait to drive her.

Getting the T ready for drive to St. Louis on old Rt66. Packed the wheel bearings today and going to check all the bolts for tightness. My son took his T home to St. Louis yesterday to start working on it. We have been waiting for a new bridge to be finished on old 66. I won’t drive on the interstate. Have a great day. Clyde

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
We recharged the magnets in the 21 today. There was just enough magnetism left in them to use the KR Wilson gauge to find N-S, then zapped them in 4 places with the KR Wilson Magnet Battery Charger. Back to running on mag. Ok that was the good news, the bad, I forgot to take the rocker arm cover off the running board and by time I got back to where it fell off, it was flat! Oh poo, but it sacrificed it's self to the car gods for all the trouble the car has been giving me this past few weeks! Maybe it will run better now? Fingers crossed thinking good thoughts

I am really pleased for you. I know the last few months have been slow and painful for you as you waited for the last few parts to all come together. It really is a lovely car. Congratulations.

Thank you Scott. I learnt a lot and made several mistakes which I repaired with the help of knowledgeable people like you. Thank you all MTFCA members. For sure it was painful sometimes... But now hearing the smooth engine is like music on my ears.

I got my engine/transmission in the chassis, and the firewall and steering column in place. There's still a gap between the tranny and the shortened drive shaft, waiting for a new KC Warford to become available.

Spent a day with the paint gun this week. Got the springs assembled and attached the rebuilt and assembled front end and radius rods on the TT chassis. Hurrican Dorian put me a week behind, but that's where the advantage of retirement comes handy. God bless those effected by that storm.

26 Roadster has been sitting for a year or so. Poured in a quart of gasoline and she fired right up. Maybe that will give me some motivation. Need to get the pickup bed finished and installed.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Well, I finally got all 3 to start today and took all 3 to the gas station, one at a time as well as a gas can to get gas. One had been setting for about a year and the gas was so low it wouldn't start. One has a dead battery about 5 years old, but anyway they all got a good run and they have been rotated in the garage. The one closest to the door gets driven most. For the third one, I have to move the other two, so it gets driven the least. I put the one with the dead battery in the third position and before I rotate again, need to get a new battery. Anyway, I think the fuel problems are over.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
I've been out of action for a month or more. Finally got back to "repairing" some fenders for a farm vehicle I'm building. The fenders had an are that was very thin with holes. I made some skin graph panels to support the steel. I originally tried to weld them on but I suck at welding. I didn't used to but do now. In the end I wound up cleaning the fender real good and sandwiching Bondo between the new panels and the fender then Riveted them on with some steel rivets I had in stock. Their good and strong now and will work perfect for what I'm building. I will clean up the area a bit and use some Bondo while trying to keep that pitted rust look before painting.
Just give me time to Rust and I'll be good as new. Wabi-Sabi

I loaded "Rusty 21" on a U Haul auto transport today to visit The California Highway Patrol inspector. It seems that after out phone conversation about frames he went online and learned a lot about model T's. I explained to him about date codes. He verified Rusty 21's Engine number and signed off the paperwork. Next stop is The department of motor vehicles to finish off my paperwork.
I also ordered a personalized license plate that reads RUSTY 21.https://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp2 ... smyeky.jpg

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Put 21" wheels on the rear of the 1921for more tire on the the ground. Still have 30's up front for now. Still chasing down a miss at some speeds. Compression is 90 across the board warm. (The Raloo Rocket with Chevrolet over head). I know it is not spark as it does the same with distributor or coils. Ether it is fuel or valve float or sticky valve? Don't know. Need to change oil back to 10-30, even with low band backed off and clutch adjusted, gets a lot of creep, sometimes major till it's warmed up. Wants to stall the engine when I put the Warford into gear because I have to used the brake pedal to stop the output shaft. (has a cut down 26/27 brake drum with good lug caps) Have a tour this Saturday.

I've been working on my 26 coupe for a couple years, I bought it in 1962, and the last time it ran was 1965 till today.
I finally was at the point to put the radiator on it. It cranked over with the started about twice and ran like a top, ran for about 15 min. I idled it down and you could count the beats of the exhaust running on mag. Got some minor stuff to do biggest thing left is the interior and top. Hopefully I'll be driving it around before the weather turns bad this fall/winter.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Not that I expect it to be viewed as a significant accomplishment, I replaced a busted starter button today. Lucky for me, it failed in the open position. Doing this kind of ordinary maintenance had become something of a challenge because of my spine injuries, and with the floorboards out, dropping things through the car to the garage floor once meant getting on my knees and crawling under to retrieve the prodigal nuts, washers, bolts, tools, etc.
Well, this gadget, colloquially known as a "pick-up stick," makes reaching though the bottom of the car quite easy. It has a magnetic tip for ferrous escapees and a claw for grabbing non-magnetic items (and, I suppose, radioactive isotopes). They're available through surgical supply stores and online. Here's where one such gizmo can be purchased online:

Went to a car show 25 hilly miles away. Made it with no issue. Had to stop for a photo op with my navigator and chief mechanic.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Tim M and Joe A did some picking today and we took my touring for a little spin. Definitely running better after some fuel tinkering.
Both complemented me on my car running well
Felt good after the temperature had climbed up today quickly.
Always a pleasure to bs with a couple of knowledgeable T fellows and make a few bucks too.

Picked up my wagon full of corn and put it in the barn for my winter heat. I havnt driven the RPU much this summer with the TT on the road. It was a great day, about 72 degrees and sunny. After work I had to pay the farmer so I took about a 15 mile ride!

Drove a few miles down the road to get some plumbing. I've got about 400 miles on this old car in 2 weeks.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Took the Chevrolet overhead conversion off and went back to stock. That means a 40LB compression drop! (90 down to 50) Been having too many back fires thru the carb so need to reassess the springs I used or look for sticking valve. Did find I should have been running a sacrificial anode even with anti-freeze, the passages were getting goobered up in the aluminum adapter. May need to resurface the head again before it goes back on, I could see were there was blow-by between the head and gasket at the back of #4. When I was looking at the conversion in prep to taking it off, almost wanted to cry because of all the work I have done to put it on. I really didn't need the Warford with the conversion except for overdrive on the flat, but sure am glad I didn't take it off like I was going to. Think I will be needing the in-between gear now.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Nothing to mine, but got about a dozen carbs in the mail, spent several hours on the phone with people walking them through how to do their own carb, bought three big boxes of carbs including some pretty unique ones, bought a new 6 V alternator for my coupe along with some other parts, bought two Ruckstells at an auction -- actually had a friend buy them for me since I was too busy to go to the auction -- made a plan to meet him and pick them up that didn't work out so they are still a couple hundred miles away. Spent a couple hours taking pictures and making a list of about 20 engines and blocks I'm going to sell if I can get an ad running and have time to deal with them, stood and stared at the speedster project I bought three or four years ago, etc. Didn't go on the T tour that ended today even though I wanted to cause my T wasn't ready and I didn't have time. Maybe next month I will get it put inside or go for a drive. Haven't started it since the tour in July. I dunno how it got close to the end of September.

On my 15 runabout restoration project, so far I've completed the painting (https://www.mtfca.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6764).
I've also finished rebuilding my coil box, which go with the coils rebuilt my Erik Larson. I've also finished staining and varnishing the wheels. Sorry, but I just couldn't paint those Stutzman wheels black!

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
My clutch adjusting bolt was upside down and the brake lever had to swing too far forward to clear the bolt's head. I couldn't install my newly finished floor boards. The metal trim plate would not allow enough travel to get into high gear. I flipped the bolt and can now install the floor boards.
I made a guess as to the proper clutch adjustment starting point and I rolled the car a few feet in the shop while watching to see if the engine turned. That's when I confirmed that my ring and pinion gears are shot. I could hear the teeth skipping. I guess I have a new next-project. At least I know I have good gears (and bad bearings) in my spare rear end and torque tube.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Took a 75 mile round trip in the rain today to the East Troy Railway Museum. Got to ride a 1929 electric trolley. Stopped at the ice cream shop next door for a treat and a photo op. Slight hill in front of the building so I parked in a way that my brakes would hold. Then I went inside to see this on the menu. Had to go back outside to retake the photo. I guess the guy in the TT was afraid of his truck rolling away too!

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Went into town this morning in the 100 year old Taurus (centerdoor) to get a haircut. Unfortunately the exhaust pack nut came unscrewed and slid down the exhaust when about 1/2 mile from home. Turned around because I was scared the floorboards might catch fire, then the car, then me...and I wouldn’t need the haircut. So I cranked up the ‘14 runabout and had a 40 minute Tour into town and a 45 minute Car Show while there. Came home to a cool Manifold and pipe and reattached pack nut. Then made final inclusions of items to take to Rockville IN mañana...
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people.

Meanwhile, i am working on a new top and front bow for my 13 Touring. Here it is in disassembled state. The front bow on this car had just about crumbled to dust. The firewall was in similar condition. I worry a bit about the rest of the wood in this car as a result of these discoveries.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Had the freeze plug pop again. Dumped all my water onto the carb which promptly killed my engine. Drag racers use water injection, so I thought it'd be faster. Nope, died on the side of the road. I pushed her to the local Kwik Trip, borrowed some tools. Pulled plugs, spun the engine to pump out water. Tapped the freeze plug in, reinstalled plugs, put water in the radiator and continued on my merry way. Everyone was amazed that in 20 minutes I had her going again.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
I haven't posted a What Have You Done for quite a while, but yesterday and today I did something. I've been using a bike speedometer for several years. It's great when it works, but I've lost count of the times it's failed because of flying rocks and other road hazards damaging the delicate little wiring or knocking the sensor out of position.
The final straw was the latest failure. I found the sensor mounting bracket broken in two and the sensor completely gone. Obviously a front wheel is too dangerous a location, so I determined that I'd move the works to a back wheel.
The location I decided to use required a threaded tube. I drilled down the center of a ¼-20 bolt and cut off the head. I tossed four before I finally got one right.
I figured that the sensor would be safe from flying rocks if I put it inside the brake drum. Mounting the magnet in the drum was pretty easy.
The threaded tube brings the wires in, and the sensor mounting bracket is held by one of the radius rod bolts.
A two-foot length of fuel hose serves as a wire housing up into the frame, out of harm's way, I hope. The hose is wired in place and the wire is held by the same radius rod bolt that holds the sensor bracket inside the drum.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Running with a wheel jacked up in the shop it works perfectly. The real test will be whether it survives out on the road. Even if this works out OK, I'll make a mounting bracket and install wiring for the Garmin. It won't hurt to have two speedometers. I'll also put in a real 1915 speedometer if I ever remember where I put it.

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
Took mine to the local car show, spent most of the time entertaining many little ones and doing my best to induct 2 couples into the club. I also put linseed oil on it to keep it from surface rusting every time it rains or gets wet while out and about. Since I have been bringing the T to this show every month, more T's are showing up....

Oklahoma chrome, Joe?
I went for a three-mile walk this morning. What does that have to do with Model T's? Next week I'll be going to Hershey in search of parts for my T projects. Last year, after three days of walking I was pretty sore. This time I aim to be ready for it before I go.

Wayne, try this for posting pictures:
1. Email the pictures to yourself using your smart phone.
2. On your computer, open the email that you sent yourself and save the pictures to your desktop.
3. Get into this forum thread, create a new reply, and drag the photos from your desktop into the reply window just below your text. I think there is a limit of five photos per reply.
4. Click on "preview" to make sure that your photos made it into your post.
5. Click on "submit" - done!

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
I got the refurbished gas tank back on the TT along with a newly rebuilt carb w/shutoff valve and installed some new plugs and cleaned up the sparkplug wire contacts. Next on to installing the new fuel line and figuring out how to rebuild the sediment bowl on the gas tank. shutoff valve seems stuck open and the handle is broke with a little nub remaining. Not sure if I need it to close since the shutoff valve elbow is in place on the carb now. - Matt

Re: What have you done with your T in September?
I was tired of looking at my worn out starting crank. The bushing was shot and the spring was missing too. I was planning to build up the shaft with weld and grind it until I scored a piece of hardened 4140 shaft stock. That stuff is hard on drill bits and bench grinder wheels.
The new bushing is in and the spring will go on after the paint cures.

Mark, I don't think you have near enough gap/taper for the weld joint. Also, if that shaft is that hard, the handle may well come off in your hand some day. JMHO Dave
