A question from a UK Model T owner:

"I have recently purchased a Model T after market carburettor manufactured by Wheeler and Schebler Indianapolis.I am in the process of reconditioning it and wondered if you might hold any information relating to the carburettor and in particular the operating and setting up instructions."

Can any of you erudite gentlemen help please?

Chris a photo and/or model number would help. I have a lot of manuals.

More then likely it one of these; The one on the left is setup like the Stromberg the one on the right has a en-richer valve added. Most all that I have seen have the neck like the one on the left. The one on the right may have had the aluminum neck put on sometime in the past or as it came out of Canada may have come that way. The one on the left is the earlier type.

Looked in all my vintage manual with no luck on that model. Sorry I could not be of service.

I just checked the one like you showed, I think these adjustments might get you in the ball park. First check the adjustments on the one you have, if you are lucky they are close already.
The adjustment knob in the center of the tube is the idle fuel mixture from seated it would be between 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 turns open open from seated. This is a fuel adjustment, not air/fuel.
For main fuel; with the lever down try about 2-1/2 to 3 turns open from seated.
Start the car. Lift the lever for richer mixture and choke only to prime (you may want to play with choking). If the engine is running too rich drop the lever.
After the motor warms up;
For idle; turn the idle needle in till the engine drops in power then back out till it picks up again.
For main fuel, with the lever down running the engine at a speed about equal to 20 MPH. Turn down till engine speed starts to drop then back out till it picks up again plus one or two clicks. (Mine was set at about 53 clicks from seated, but yours may be different)
Close the throttle, then open again. If there is any pause, open the main fuel needle another click.
Try a road test so it is under load. There is some adjusting to get everything set so there is no pause when you open the throttle and you may have to play a little with both main and idle.
The lever opens the main needle when a richer mixture is needed like starting cold or maybe going up hill (don't recall I ever used it on a hill).
Both needles open counter clockwise and close clockwise. The idle speed is set by screw on lever. Don't force the needles down onto their seats, turn down till just seated.
I hope that is of some help. It has been more then a couple of years since that last time I ran mine, but it was set for my engine when I took it off. Once you get things set, these are pretty good carbs.

There are the two Wheeler Schebler units I have. One of them was cleaned and adjusted by Stan.
I have not yet had a chance to install one on my Speedster, especially since I did not know how to adjust them.
There are some differences between them as you can see.
