I have a little bubbling around 3 of my spark plugs, so I figured I would give the "aluminum foil" trick a try as some here recommended. Easier said than done! How do you get the foil to stay in place as you screw in the plug? I cut a strip of heavy foil and wrapped clockwise. First, since the plug thread is tapered when you wrap it the strip wants to climb up the plug. The when you try to screw it in it shreds and doesn't stay in place. Is this some sort of hazing for the new guys on the forum?

I know I'm fine just leaving the plugs leaking until I can afford better ones (these are old Champion X's), but I'm kind of stubborn and want to know how you guys get the foil trick to work.

Forget the tin foil - use never-seize if you can't tighten them enough.

I have used aluminum without a problem. You have to form it to the threads before you try to screw it in. New spark plugs won't make it any better, the problem is with the threads in the head. Probably rust in the threads. You could try cleaning with a pipe tap, but you can't remove much without ruining the head.

I have been using white teflon tape for years with no issues. Just make sure foil or tape is wrapped the correct direction or it will walk off.

Tape or foil is wrapped in a Counter-clockwise direction, so when you turn the plug clock-wise the material stays on.

All that said, aluminum foil actually is very useful when hunting snipes.
