I've taken apart alot of transmissions, but I dont remember ever finding this many cracked discs. Can't imagine the heat it took to do this.

Improper adjustment and/or a weak spring, would be my hypothesis. ;)

And THAT, Steve, is the $64,000 question, isn't it?

Worn thin, or just cracked ? Running low on oil ?

I've seen lots of them, but not like that.

The drum has groves worn, but I've seen worse. Improper adjustment, bad driving skills, and a oil pan with a plug in the top hole all could be factors.

My initial thought on those plates is they are “flexing” in operation going from flat to dished. The cracking appears to be
adjacent to the cut out on the outer plates. As suggested by others a possibility is catching on the drum and not sliding
I’m aware of some rebuilders who intentionally bend one or two plates into a dished form to give a quicker cleaner
disengage into neutral. Alan
