How snug should the bendix stop nut fit in the starter casting?
Mine binds. Shouldn't it spin freely?

Yes, it should spin freely.

Like all used Model T starters, it was started too many times with spark advanced and the backfire of the engine has bent the output shaft. In some lesser cases, the cast iron has moved ever so slightly out of line.

This is a partial account as to why starter repairs (correct ones) are costly and once fixed, great care should be taken to ensure the car is properly timed at the commutator and the spark lever is all the way "up" when stepping on that darn button!

This is a common problem with used starters and can be corrected by re-bushing the stop nut running area.
But it is a slippery slope. After doing so, you may also have to install a new main shaft bushing and have it align reamed.

P.S. While your at it install an oil seal in the mounting bracket main bushing hole.

P.S. While your at it fix this end play problem too.
