26 - 27 Rear brake drum question

Post by RGould1910 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 2:21 pm

How do you remove and install 27 brake shoes? I can't remove the spring much less reinstall it after the shoe is fitted over the tabs and the brake cam.

Leverage ;)

Ford shows using a bar like tool, so both hands for the work.

But just did that this last week, my trick is a handy pair of good Vise Grips, snapped around the lower spring shank, and then placing a bar on top of the widest part of the horizontal locked pliers handles, used a socket extension bar, 8".

That gave grip with both hands to push down hard and stretch the spring so the hook fitted into the band lug. Keep face out the the way when looking to hook that spring in case something flies apart!

Wouldn’t modern brake spring pliers work ?
Available at most any parts store.

Thanks for the tips gents. I finally got the job done using vise grips and a bar for leverage. :P

Thanks for the info. I was able to mount the shoes using vise grips on the springs. Quite a job!

Some do, some don't. It depends how they are shaped. I find Vise Grips the easiest.

I would avoid anything like pliers that could nick the spring wire were the jaws grab it. Under tension that nick could lead to a break. I used the tool suggested above or a screw driver to pry it on.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I don't have hard time. I have the shoe off the car and attach the spring. Then I put the shoe on the backing plate and then push one of the shoe tabs on the cam and then use a screwdriver and pry the other on. It works for me.
