What is the purpose of the ball choke vs the air horn choke for these carbs?

Just a guess since I've never used one, does it act as a silencer?

The ball choke seems to be specific to the Model M carbs, and as I recall, their intended purpose was to act as a silencer. However... their true purpose seems to have been to break every carburetor housing they were ever mounted to!

I've always heard them referred to as "roar bowls" !

The "ball choke" is actually a muffler - it changes the tone of the allegedly annoying "hiss" that Winfield carbs have to something less "in your ear"... I've never really noticed that it was particularly annoying myself, but I guess some people do.
Maybe because I run the car a little faster and that "hiss" vanishes out the back with the greater increase in speed, I don't know...
I always figured if the Winfield hiss was that annoying to someone, I'd be more than happy to volunteer to take it off their hands. Because no one should have to have a bad audio experience in their flivver... Consider it my sacrifice to the cause!
