Cleaning up is a good thing

One of the benefits of cleaning up and organizing the shop is finding stuff you forgot you had.

I don't remember where I got this, of course, but all it needs is an adapter to fit a Model T engine.

Looks like Christmas came early!
Make sure that hose is in good condition, and up to the task of about 80 psi and you should be good to go! Once you get that adapter.

I've got one just about like that Steve, I don't know where it is right now either! Dave

Cleaning up is necessary, but I am not good at it. I tend to start a little project, have to stop for lack of materials or whatever, then go on to another project without putting the tools back because I will need them when I come back to the first project. So too many projects with tools and materials strewn around. When I can't find a 1/2" or 9/16" open end wrench I stop all projects and put all tools away. I have eight 1/2" wrenches and six 9/16" wrenches.

At least I have gotten to the point where I have a place for every tool and know where it goes, that simplifies putting them away.

When I was a kid, dad had one like that he carried in every car he ever owned. Standard equipment as was a tool box .

I've often wondered if the gasoline vapor that is pumped into the tube with one of these does any kind of damage over time.

There is no gasoline vapor pumped in, fresh air comes in thru the part that screws in to the head.

We had a spark plug pump we used to pump up tires on the farm. I think it came with 3 adapters. TSC and Western Auto sold them. Do they still make them? If the plug was easy to get to it was easy to use. But when they were popular flat head engines were common so it was easy to hook one up. Not so much anymore!

Do they still make them?

Yes and no. They're available with a shorter hose for use on motorcycles, but they're not made for cars. Something to do with catalytic converters.

I have one too but it is missing all the adapters.

If it has 14mm spark plug thread, you only need this adapter.

Ahh, that's clever. Do they work well?

Not sure I buy the catalytic converter part. Most newer cars have spark plugs that you can’t get to and coils mounted direct to the plug. Also most people today would be incapable of hooking one up. Probably not enough demand.

Dad used one in the Plymouth for blowing up air mattresses. I'm the guy in the striped shirt. 1946.

When using one of these adapters be sure to short out the spark plug wire while it is disconnected. Running the engine with the wire just dangling could damage the coil.

Also, I don't think the T engine is going to pump the 55 psi needed for 30x3 or 30x3 1/2 tires.

I wonder if Schrader made those for Ford? I've seen them with Ford script. You could make an adapter out of an old spark plug.

Well I moved mine so now I can't find it! After looking on Ebay, knowing the size of the threads on Steve's might not help anyway. I see now there were several different types with different thread arrangements.

Bob

Jim Eubanks reply that it draws fresh air in is a clue as to how it develops pressure: the pump is a sort of accumulator pump with a smaller volume cylinder being swept by the larger volume of the piston. It's pump per sweep is much smaller than the piston, but is multiplied in pressure (compressed) for the tire fill.

Most accumulator pumps are hydraulic/air, but with different swept volumes, air/air will work too. This guy's video shows a Schrader pump and you'll see the volume of the actual pump itself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LjbjtPR8BQ

I found mine, right where I put it after I moved it! ;) Mine is like the sample below, without adapters fits 18mm spark plug hole. Poop! I can find adapters to fit 14mm plugs into 18mm hole, not so much the other way. :x You can buy them but the thread is wrong.

But should be an easy make if I can get to the lathe. Got more then I need of the 14mm to 1/2 pipe ones.

Here's mine.
The word "Tractor" is below the Ford script.
I have no idea why the first photo posted twice. Or why the gauge photo is below the text.

Howdy, Scott. Thanks for the explanation and video. That's exactly how a steam powered water pump can push make-up water into the same boiler it's getting the steam from. I shoulda have knowed. Regards, Bob.

The Ford (tractor) pump is really neat! I bet that Ford pump was made in the 8-9n Ford era which was 39- 52. Could be later but not much later. The braided cloth covered hose goes way back anyway.
The fluctuating needle brings backs memories when airing up a large back tire on the back of the Ford tractor we had. It took a while and after it got aired up the plug adapter was really hot! We blew out the one we had after speeding up the engine because I thought it was to slow. Got another one from Western Auto to use when we had to.

Cleaning up is good. I do it about once a month and while I'm building a car, I go through my mis parts bins to remind me what I've already ordered for that car and what I need.

I'm not going to admit to how many times I've ordered the same part multiple times because I didn't remember that I already had it.

Go buy a 1/2 by 1/8 pipe bushing, drill it out to the proper diameter for a 14 mm tap, tap it and you have your adapter. Make 4 and use them for your spark plugs. I prefer steel pipe bushings.

I sometimes order parts months before starting a project to spread out the costs. I keep spreadsheets for both of my cars where I list parts or services purchased with "from" and expenditures columns. It helps me keep track of what I have and what I need.

I have been cleaning and organizing my shop and in the process so far have found enough pieces and parts to build up two more model T's.

Mark, if I spent the time getting as organised as you, I wouldn't get anything done. The only spreadsheet I have is used to throw over stuff on which I don't want paint overspray. As for expendidtures, if I kept a record of those and my wife found out, well............... I much rather keep the peace than keep the records.

That is some serious organization Mark.

I work with spreadsheets at work and since my garage is a happy space, spreadsheets are a no-go 😀

I just keep all my extras for spares down the road,
