No, ... I was too busy basking in gratitude that this hideous sort of Americana
is gone and we can now all rejoice in the safety and comfort of our vinyl siding
world.

Is that a wood furnace in front of the North Pole ice cream shop?. Yes, gas tank planters that's appropriate (clever) for a service station

Reminds me of when I was a boy! We made a round trip from Los Angeles to Chico in a 36 Ford tudor. First car I remember. Many places along highway 99 similar to those in the pictures. Then came WWII and gas was rationed. We rarely left the area around home for about 4 years.

Doug- Zoom in on the North Pole image.
The lettering on the heater reads 'Bar-B-que'.

I bet Burger liked the North Pole Ice Cream photo the best. Look at all those overhead wires. Think of all the insulators !

The Saw Pit Store was still in operation a few years back.
Is it still there?

Saw Pit Mercantile is still there but building looks completely different now. Here is a link, click on the history tab and see the same picture as posted above plus a neat story.

Ahhh memories ! Grand Pop started a store in 02. He had the building moved via horse and wagon a mile or
two away. He sold groceries, kerosene and feed. Later there was a post office inside too. When cars started
to become numerous along the road, gas pumps were added. Soda was in an ice cooled, butterfly lid Coca Cola box. There
was first a coal stove then a pot bellied kerosene stove by the time I came along in 41. There was a cathedral
style radio that someone had to hold their hand on to act as an antenna if you wanted to get any reception.
There were chairs to sit on and when they ran out a wooden soda box turned up on end would be used. The
counter held a curved glass candy cabinet with square dishes of penny candies, Coke was a nickle and the larger
bottles were six cents.
Sadly the store changed hands several times after my father sold it and was demolished a number of years ago
to make way for a more modern structure.

Burger, I can understand your love for glass insulators. Nothing like a bunch of insulators all in a row for a kid with the 22 he just got for Christmas.

Dick (Just kidding ...... don't shoot !)
