I just came across the plans my son made up for the steering cross member and header for my speedster that I am putting back together after having it apart for 5 years. The rebuild is detailed in my Speedster Rebuild thread. I am very lucky to have a son and daughter-in-law that are involved in the hobby. But my son is also my Jiminy Cricket. I was going to make the cross member from 1/4" plate welded together and the header as a log style. But "the Secrets of Speed" book says 32" primaries, and so I got told and lectured on what would and would not look period. As they say, the rest is history. He gave me his drawings and expected me to produce the parts.

So here is the cross member

And yes, you're fortunate to have kids with that level of interest.

What fun? While some of us long for the good old days the modern advancements sure are wonderful.

My son is an accomplished machinist and (mad!) fabricator who will make anything I need for my cars....I just have to give him a drawing or blueprint. It often takes me longer to do that than for him to make the part! Peter and I (and many others I’m sure) are fortunate to have sons involved with the hobby.

Speedway sells some pretty good tubing bend kits. All mandrel bends so you can cut part way along a bend and the tubing is still round. They also have collectors.
