Mounting 1913 Oval Gas Tank

I removed and cleaned the oval gas tank from my 1913 Touring.
The old hardware was mismatched so I got new bolts, castellated nuts, and cotter pins.
Do the bolts push into the brackets from the bottom or down from the top?
Seems like down from the top with the castellated nuts exposed would make it easier to install the cotter pins.

Really should be a round tank.

The bolts I've seen have all been top-down, nut on bottom.

Thanks Scott.
I meant round.
Past my bedtime of 9:30 lol.

Thanks again,

My 13 wont help as it has had some damage where it looks like someone pried the tank up and out through the seat platform to replace it or something. I do think Scott is correct about it should be a round tank but don't take my word on this one, let the experts confirm this.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply and photo.
I have the same tank (I should've written "round" and not oval.
A previous owner did the same thing to my seat platform so I'll have to address that at some point.
My tank is back in and all tightened down.
I had to loosen the straps temporarily on both ends and do a little wiggling with them to get everything lined up.

Best regards,
Gene

I was taught to always put the bolt in from the top, that way if the nut should come off through vibration, you still have the bolt ! ;)

The tank will not come out the top on a '13 touring. I've always put the bolts in with the nuts on top. They can't come out, because they have a cotter pin in them. The Ford service book clearly shows this. I had to lift the body off the chassis on my '13 touring to remove the gas tank. On my '13 roadster, the tank barely comes out through the top.
