timer relocater(or?)

A friend has a timer relocater, I guess. He was calling it a distributor but says you reuse the four original coils with it, so I'm guessing it must be a relocater(or?). I'm thinking about going to have a look at it. Anybody running one? You like it? Seems like a good idea to me.

They're called a timer elevator & they work good - need to do a bit of fidgeting to time it correctly so as to not short out one of the cylinders as you advance the spark rod.

I like Model T's for their primitive simplicity. Admittedly, this as well as the countless other gee-gaw accessories of the period are interesting for their sometimes brilliance and others for their whimsical uselessness. This device appears to be a solution in search of a problem. Myself, I would not be a fan of introducing a device that presents a number of potential failure modes while offering zero improvement in performance.
Of all of my T's, I'd be shocked if I did a study to figure out how often I have to service any timer and found it to be more often than once every couple of years. And when I do, it's a 5 minute job at the very worst.

What is the alleged benefit of this device?

My handicap makes it difficult to access the timer on our T.

I believe I could service it much easier when necessary if it was relocated higher.

Long ago when i found one in my grand dads barn i asked what it was used for? As told 60 years ago it was to get the timer up and out of all the mud, water, dirt, and snow of the roads of the time.

Bud.

I am with Thom on this,I would love to have those on my T's as reaching down in that hole with a bad back and sore hip can be a pain.Granted, not something you do that often but yea,I wouldn't mind have those myself.

Bud and Tdump made the only 2 points I could agree with.

I wonder if one of these would fit on a Model N, considering that its timer location is even harder to reach than a Model T.

Considering we don't have to drive our T's in mud (I don't) & adverse road conditions, the obvious purpose is for keeping it up out of the road debris and the ease of service !
