Post by Ruxstel24 » Tue Jan 29, 2019 12:41 pm

The newest arctic blast is about here...
The high WAS 24 at 3-4 am, now it's about 15 degrees. Below zero tonight and -10 tomorrow night. Wind picking up creating -20 degree wind chills, -50 in some areas !! :o
Everyone take the necessary precautions and stay safe and warm.
I will be right here... :D

Yes be safe! Just home from town. Came on an accident "roll over". Girls were about froze. Came on accident last night on way home from the fire station. Jeep spun out and hit the end of a guard rail. Blew the rear tire. He had a tire, lug wrench and no jack. Thin jacket,no gloves, tennis shoes.
Im sure we will be called out soon. Going down to -22 tomorrow night with high of -10. Next three days is below 0 for high temp and wind chill to -50.
Be prepared and all will be fine. Its the ones that are not prepared we have to rescue.
Im prepared to sit in front of this. I learned it from her

As a kid in California I heard from my folks about the cold winters in Kansas. But after moving here I found that it's pretty tame compared to what happens farther north. In the middle of the continent we get some occasional single digits for a day or two, maybe a couple of times a winter, then the north wind changes to a south wind and the entertainment moves on. Still, I'm looking forward to highs above 70º instead of thirties and forties. Just 50 days to spring. :)

Right now its all the way down to 70. That said its been cool here to. Iv been waking up to temps in the 40's in the mornings, Yesterday it never made it to 60. I went to the gun range yesterday and came home after about 1/2 an hour. I was to cold.
As Tom Sellick told Marston in the movie Quigley Down Under, I told you I dont have much use for handguns, I never said I didn't know how to use them!

Supposed to get down to -31 tonight and -37 tomorrow here in the jackpines. Was outside playing with the dogs and checking on the neighbor's cabins at -17 this afternoon. If you could stay out of the wind it wasn't bad.[attachment=0]DSC01303.JPG[/attachment

We had winter for the first two weeks of January. We actually had the fire going all day for a few days! There was even frost on top of the car parked outside. It got down to 31degrees above one morning! Well spring has arrived and the flowers are starting to bloom. No fire so far for over a week, even at night! Hopefully, we won't get any frost again because this happened last year and the fruit trees blossomed and then we had a frost which caused very little fruit.
This is a mountain area about 2,000' and about 15 miles north of the Mexican border and 35 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Usually if it doesn't snow in January, it won't for the season, so we are almost over our "winter".

Good to see the dogs being treated right! Way way too many are going to freeze tonight if not freeze to death cause the moron owners think that "fur coat" is warm enough. Love the pic with the dog almost against the stove!
We had a beagle/shepherd who just adored the fireplace. Her ears would stay in tune with the crackling logs and she would lay there about 18" from the open hearth just panting away. Do you think she would move? Heck no!!

Thank you guys for taking good care of the four footed babies!

Tim, we used to have a fireplace with the hearth even with the floor.
Our boxer Bella would lay so close she would yelp and jump up when she realized her feet were cooking. More than once !!

Can't blame us Canadians for this polar vortex, it originated from Siberia!

I did temps in the -20's and worse while stationed at Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota.

That was all it took for this south Texas boy to say never again. There is nothing good, charming, fun or interesting about that level of cold.

It has been a sucky day for sure!

Kid gave me his nasty cold/flu yesterday. He has been sick as a dog for 5 days, at one point he had 103 temp. I barely slept last night due to the hacking. Get up this morning and no hot water in the upstairs bathroom. The pipe froze and ruptured in two places. Had to tear in to the wall to fix it. Did not have the right parts, so 2 parts runs. And don't forget a 2 hour nap mid repair. I'm ready for another nap!

Is it spring time yet?

Why the cold air while the poles are getting warmer faster than the rest of the globe?

As more thermal energy is put into the globe by increasing temperature, the jet stream is meandering more than in the past. This pushes tongues of cold air south while at the same time pushing warm air north. There will be more of this as the global warming continues. It has the effect of distributing the thermal energy, resulting in more uniform global temperature, making the poles warm faster than the rest of the planet. Changes in ocean current will contribute to the thermal distribution, but it will take a longer time to see the effect.

Can't we just blame the Russians?

"-24.9 F" at 7:45 this morning.....
That is without any wind chill... Hunker down and stay safe! Common sense and logic need to be the guide. Black ice, packed snow, curves and overpasses don't seem to slow down the invincible idiots on the highway. Again, be safe! And, "Above freezing" this weekend....
