Hello!
Is there anyone Who can tell me some information about these ambulances in romanian service during ww1. There are not like those with wooden walls in french or american service on the western front. Are they model t pickup modified? All these photos are taken during summer 1917 battles on the eastern front, Romania. Please could someone help me with more information, drawings or photos about this type of ambulance? Thank you!

Ford did not produce pickups until 1925. More than likely the chassis were purchased without bodies and the bodies were custom built and installed once the cars reached Europe. The caption on the second picture says, German Romanian prisoner exchange at Marasesti Romania February 10, 1918

They look like this one to me. I am not an expert but there are several who are on this forum. Hopefully they will chime in.

It is rather interesting that in the first and third picture, the men in uniform standing appear to be black. There were no black people in Europe at that time. The pictures have been taken of the cars somewhere else than Europe, maybe India. I have been known to be wrong. No disrespect meant regards to race. Frank

FIrst, they are 1915/16 T,s. right hand drive so more than likely Canadian T,s. Canada did send some T,s over to France at that time in packing crates and the ambulance bodies built with that timber. Complete built T,s also, some being supplied by different Sponsers and charities for the war effort. So bodies can vary.

Have you tried contacting Crucea Rosie? It looks like these were kept in service after WW1. Perhaps they have more photos and information in their archive.

What is the symbol with the crown on the side of the ambulances?

There are some photos of ambulances that France sent to Romania on gallica.bnf.fr. They are quite different to the ones in your images:

The Africans in the photo are probably from the French colonies. France deployed hundreds of thousands of African troops in Europe during World War One.

The symbol on the side of ambulances is the monogram of The Queen Mary of Romania, who was the founder and leader of medical nurses and ambulance service in Romania during ww1.

There are no africans in these photos, only romanian soldiers who spent a lot of time under the burning sun.
