Need input for new Part

Post by Dan Hatch » Mon Jan 06, 2020 11:32 am

Guys: I am thinking about making a run of washer shims for the Front Axle Spindles Bushings. This will go under the bushings to add height to take up for wear in the front axle “yoke”. That will keep you from having to weld up axle and machine back to size.
Any interest? Thanks Dan

Won't new bushings fill the space? They generally have to be shortened to fit. How many axles are worn enough to need building up or shims?

By the time they are faced off where they are square, the space is too wide for the new bushings. I am finding this on most axles now days. Dan

Quite a few used axles could benefit from a shim under the new bushing, especially the top one as the most wear in the yoke is on top from the weight of the car, lack of lubrication and road grime acting as a grinding compound !

That thought crossed my mind a few years ago when I was looking for a better less worn axle for my 21 Touring. I was going to use a flat washer of the right size and size it to fill the space between the bushing and axle.
I did later find a good axle with good threads but kept the other axle. I’m probably not the first guy to think of doing that when you can’t find a better one.

Good idea, having shims to be placed over the bushings.

On this spindle, opposite issue, the axle yoke was OK.

But the spindle body was cut-off short to install useless needle bearing collar and needle bearing bushing.

Removed those worn and junk pieces, even the king pin was wrecked from the needle bearings. But the new brass bushings were too short due to the cut-off body.

With a new bushing there was gap at the yoke, so a thin washer shim was placed on the neck of the spindle body before setting the new bushing.

Tried different ways of making a shim, found a correct fitting one from hardware store, think it was metric washer.

With the new shim, bushing fit was fine, had enough bushing face to ream for good fit to the axle yoke.

I was thinking I had seen an almost correct size size bushing somewhere when I posted earlier. Ace Hardware was where I later found some bushings that would have worked. I was in there for something else and accidentally saw them.

I have never considered that the gap in question was ever a problem. How does it hurt anything?

McMaster Carr has "ring shims" available in differing thicknesses that may foot the bill. You might look there.
