What bolts are for the windshield mounting brackets

Should be 5/16" x 18 carriage head bolt, 2" length. The brackets have square holes for these bolts.

I believe that the original style of nuts for the carriage bolts are square nuts or am I wrong.
When I installed the windshield brackets on my 21 Touring I used hex head bolts and I was thinking the original style were square.
