Views of St. Louis 1920s and 1930s

Post by DLodge » Wed Jan 15, 2020 10:30 am

The online edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch regularly runs features taken from the paper's archives. Not surprisingly, they often include pictures of cars and trucks of the day, as well as other interesting stuff.

From the April 1928 Street Repaving photo:
“The area that doesn't have asphalt will be paved with granite, re-using the old blocks from the street, so that oil from parked cars won't ruin the asphalt.” Apparently the Model T was not the only car to leak oil.

Thanks for sharing the photos, jb

A lot of interesting photos in that series. Sad to see so many beautiful older architectures being torn down, even so long ago. Unfortunately, sometimes, it is quite necessary for progress as future needs (like wider roadways) are often difficult to foresee.
I am curious why they say the linked-to photograph is "September 1921"? Most of the other pictures in the line-up are dated between 1927 and 1931. Those dates all appear to be near correct. The "1921" picture clearly is not that early. Most of the cars are enclosed bodied cars, a scenario that wouldn't be likely until the mid '20s. Most of the cars are clearly 1924 or newer. Several cars appear to be '27 or '28.
Probably a simple mislabeling. Not noticed by the people usually handling the archive photos.

Wayne, the photos just before and after the one in question are labeled 1931. I suspect it's a typo.

The caption didn't indicate which direction the photographer was facing...

The shadows make it obvious that the view is looking east.
The inevitable often happens.
