Theodore Mallon was a Ford six cylinder tester. His recorded experiences included attending the 1907 twenty four hour race held at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in which the Model K set a world record, testing Model K, and witnessing the last sale of Model K in 1909. Below he describes Henry Ford and Frank Kulick finding him and two other testers at a local saloon while testing their Model K:
We were surprised by Mr. Ford and Kulick at 330
Michigan Ave. Frank Kulick was driving by with Mr. Ford. We were in Polack's Saloon having a beer, Charley Miller, myself and Moore. There were two Cadillac's there. One test box (test car) was visible from Mich Ave. Back then they were testing cars the same as us. Their number was 1221. Our number was 1212.
He and Frank Kulick walked in, and here we are with a schooner of beer in our hands. He (Mr. Ford) said, "what will you boys have?" We said "well, beer." Mr. Ford took a glass of milk. Mr Kulick took a glass of milk. It pretty near crucified him, because he liked his beer too. Just the same, he said "thanks."
Mr. Ford didn't drink beer. When he took milk, Frank
Kulick took milk. We took a beer, and then we walked out. So when we got back to the plant, Frank said, "three weeks inside the yard."
It didn't last that long. Mr. Ford didn't say anything
else to us - not a word. But he said plenty to Frank.
Frank passed it on to us. The peculiar part was that (P.
E.) Martin didn't can us. In those days, you could get
canned for nothing - if you looked cock-eyed.

Schooner can be anywhere from 16 ounces to 32 ounces of beer.

330 Michigan Avenue is now a municipal bus servicing building. Polack's bar is long gone, unfortunately!
