FJ - ( SOLD ) 1914 Metz Model 22 Roadster Basket Case in Lancaster Pennsylvania for $800

Post by FreighTer Jim » Tue Jun 09, 2020 9:35 pm

SOLD

Thanks to my friend Bill Harper for identifying what appears to be a 1914 Metz Model 22 Four Door Roadster.

I took the images last Friday where it has sat for the past (50) years.

It has dual rear chains - engine - everything you see plus extra parts that go with the car which may or may not be Metz parts.

My good friend Louis Ivan Mandich Jr. is who you can call or text for more information @ 610-256-3087.

The car is in a storage barn near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Bill,

Not Yet πŸ€”

But Brent was interested in a nice 1938 LaSalle stored in another barn priced at $7500 ... πŸ˜‰

Brent got to meet Louie - who at 75 - works harder
in a day than anyone I know - yet somehow manages to always have a smile on his face 😊

after meeting with Brent to look at the Metz:

The Metz engine in a 1914 is similar to the Model T engine. The Metz auto was made from about 1909 to 1921 (as I remember). There were some 2 cylinder ones early, then only 4s.

The Metz auto was called the Metz from 1909 to 1922. Metz bought the Waltham Buckboard Company in 1908 when it was bankrupt. The model 22 was the best selling model and in 1913 the Metz Company entered three Metz 22s in the Glidden Tour than ran from Minneapolis Mn to Glacier Park. The tour was sponsored by Louis Hill, son James Hill. This was the last Gillden tour. The three Metz autos came through rough going with perfect scores and one of the Metz was consider the winner of the tour, though two of the three won trophies. The Metz is a good car and sold well, but ran into finalcial trouble in 1921.

If it would be any help, I have just posted online the third of a three-part article on Charles Metz and the Metz Company. The second and third installments are probably the most relevant content, but I think that you would find something in reading all three. For instance, mentioned in the blog somewhere is that the engine was modeled after the Ford S block, so some parts are interchangeable.

You can find my blog journal at ClassicSpeedsters.com. Please leave a comment if you find it useful, mention it to your friends, and subscribe too.

I hope that you get that Metz!

I would in a heartbeat, but I have no way to get this car from it's home to my home. Deal of the century....

Is there any paperwork for the car? NY DMV has become quite miserable to deal with if not.

For an $800 project that has sat in a barn for 50 years ?

What do you think πŸ™„

Hi Gary,

Your exhaust manifold does carry the correct part number for a Metz Model 22.

Best Regards, Bill.
